STATUE OF LIBERTY 2010
Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening theWorld was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
During the winter season, bring a warm coat and tour the Statue of Liberty with us. When you arrive back from your journey have a superior lunch of your choice at the Ritz Carlton or one the the more historical venues in the Battery Park area [all included]. Current park hours are from 9:30am to 5pm EST. Hours are adjusted seasonally. Your 1/2 day tour of the Statue and Ellis Island w lunch is $250 per person.
Statue of Liberty’s crown, which was closed after the 9/11 attacks, has re-opened to the public as of July 4th, 2009. The White House recently announced that the decision reversed the policy of the Bush administration.
Under the former President, the Interior Department, which includes the National Park Service, had insisted that visitors could not be permitted because the crown — reachable only by a very narrow, 12-story spiral staircase with a low guardrail — did not meet modern fire, building and safety codes.
No more than 10 people will be allowed in the crown at a time and officials anticipate that will allow for 30 visitors an hour. He estimated that 50,000 people would be able to visit the crown in the first year and that the number would be increased later to 100,000 a year. A spokeswoman for Mr. Salazar said that the method for distributing tickets had yet to be determined but that the secretary was committed to making sure the process was fair and equitable. Early reports that a lottery system would be used were incorrect, she said.
The statue’s torch was closed in 1916 after being damaged by a saboteur’s bomb and is still closed to the public. The entire statue, including the crown, was closed after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
TOP OF THE ROCK
Let Destination NYC accompany you to the top of New York’s Rockefeller Center!
Initially opened in 1933, it consisted of the 69th and 70th floors. It was originally designed to resemble the upper decks of a 1930s grand ocean liner, with gooseneck fixtures and large air-conditioning vents designed to look like the stacks on a ship's deck.
Top of the Rock is currently a 3-tiered observation deck on the 67th, 69th, and 70th floors of the GE Building in Rockefeller Center (upper decks 260 meters above street level). Once up to the viewing decks, the first two levels' large glass screens make great views and photographs possible; reasonable sized gaps between the screens enable cameras to get clear shots.
The top viewing deck has no screens, just the wall and a fantastic 360-degree which is one of New York’s only unencumbered views of New York City and surrounding areas.
